The Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael[‘ is a leading think tank and academy on international affairs. Intern – Militancy and Political Orders, Levant

The Conflict Research Unit (CRU) is a specialised team within the Clingendael Institute, conducting applied, policy-oriented research and developing practical tools that assist national and multilateral governmental and non-governmental organisations in their efforts to develop and implement more effective policies and programming on stability, development and rule of law in fragile and conflict-affected countries.

The Clingendael Conflict Research Unit (CRU) has an opening for an Intern for the team working on militancy and political orders in the Levant (as part of its Levant research program), from 1 February 2019 - 31 July 2019 (a six-month period). 

This internship focuses on the influence of militancy on political orders in the Levant given the region’s current proliferation of coercive organisations, especially in Syria and Iraq. The research pays particular attention to hybrid coercive organisations, i.e. organisations that compete and collaborate with a country’s government at the same time.

Job description
Relevant tasks are:
Research assistance for projects of conflict in the Levant by gathering quantitative and qualitative data and contributing to data analysis
Contribute to writing background material, drafts, and web content. 
Contribute to the visualisation of research findings in the form of infographics and data dashboards.
Assistance for the organisation of (closed) events as part of research projects and for the dissemination of research findings. 

Qualifications and experience
We would be interested if the following requirements are met:

  • BA degree relevant for this internship and current enrolment for MA degree (e.g. Middle-Eastern or African studies, political science/IR, conflict studies).
  • Fluent in Arabic and English. Kurdish, Hebrew and/or Farsi is an asset.
  • Affinity with politics and conflict dynamics in the Levant.
  • Excellence in research and research methods, good English writing skills.
  • Service-minded, social skills, capable of reaching deadlines.
  • Capable of working independently on the basis of instructions, team player.
  • Network-oriented, feeling at home in an international environment.

Technical requirements:

  • Enrollment in an MA program.
  • EER/Switzerland nationality OR holder of a Dutch study visa.

Clingendael offers:
