The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and its role in furthering Asian development

This is an event upon invitation only. For further information please contact Mrs. Carla Veltkamp.

One of China’s most consequential initiatives in recent years has been the successful launch of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Aspiring to differentiate itself from existing international financial institutions, while also closely cooperating with them, the question arises of how the AIIB sees its role and added value? How do its activities correspond to both economic development and the infrastructure investment experiences and needs of the Asian region? And what does the AIIB expect from the European countries – including the Netherlands – that joined the bank as founding members?

The Clingendael Institute has invited Mr. Jin Liqun, President of the AIIB, for a public debate and discussion with leading practitioners, business representatives and researchers in the Netherlands. Jin Liqun has extensive experience within the international financial institutions, having worked as a Vice-President at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) from 2003–2008 and earlier as Alternative Executive Director for China at the World Bank. Almost one year into the bank’s operation, President Jin will share his experience of the early achievements and challenges of the world’s newest multilateral financial institution.

The event will be moderated by Jan Melissen. A response to the keynote speech is presented by Maaike Okano-Heijmans.
