Inleiding

This is an event upon invitation only.

On Tuesday October 4th the Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law organises an expert discussion on the current political and security situation in Libya, and the implications thereof for international engagement. The Platform is run jointly by Clingendael's Conflict Research Unit (CRU) and The Hague Institute for Global Justice.

The objective of the meeting is to explore the implications of political and security affairs in Libya for what external interventions can hope to achieve, and how they should be configured. This will assist the international community, including the European Union and The Netherlands, to make a more meaningful contribution to the development of Libyan security structures.

The meeting consists of two interactive sessions. The morning sessions surveys the state of politics and security in Libya, focusing on key state and non-state actors, their interests and relations. The afternoon sessions discusses the objectives and configuration of EU efforts in crisis management in Libya (focusing on EUNAVFOR MED Sophia, EULPC, EUBAM Libya and a possible future comprehensive capacity building mission) in light of the context discussed in the morning session.

Combined, the two sessions distill key parameters for effective international interventions.
