Public event: The rule of law challenges in Montenegro

Inleiding

The Deputy Prime Minister  of Montenegro, Mr Dushko Markovic, will give a speech on the rule of law challenges of Montenegro on its path towards EU membership at the Clingendael Institute on 29th May. The EU accession negotiations with Montenegro were opened in June 2012 and these will be the first negotiations under the renewed EU enlargement strategy, which has a stronger focus on strengthening the rule of law and democratic governance. In line with this new proces, the screening of the negotiations chapters on 'Judiciary and fundamental rights' and 'Justice, freedom and security' started this spring. Mr Dushko Markovic will reflect on the progress made so far and the possible difficulties in meeting the EU demands.
