This is a public event. More information can be found here.

In this edition of Café Humanitair, organised by Humanity House, the book ‘People, Aid and Institutions in Socio-economic recovery: Facing Fragilities’ will be launched. This book provides a detailed understanding of people’s strategies to survive in the face of conflict and disaster. It also examines how the policies and aid interventions of governments and international agencies enable their socio-economic recovery – or fail to do so.

The five most important lessons of this broad study, that is mainly based on qualitative research methods, will be discussed. Stakeholders from the government, aid organizations and academia will reflect on this; can they put the lessons into practice?

The book includes the chapter 'International policies in the field of socio-economic development in fragile settings', written by Clingendael's Senior Research Fellow Anette Hoffmann. This chapter focuses on the ways in which ideas about social problems relating to fragility, socio-economic development and peacebuilding have influenced international policymaking.

The book will be presented by the editors:

  • Thea Hilhorst (Professor of Humanitarian Aid and Reconstruction at the International Institute of Social Studies)
  • Bart Weijs (Coordinator of the Partners for Resilience Programme at Care Nederland)
  • Gemma van der Haar (Assistant Professor at the chair group Sociology of Development and Change, Wageningen University).

Reflections on the book will be made by Dirk Salomons (Director of the Humanitarian Policy Track, School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University) and Holly Ritchie (consultant international development and academic researcher at the Instiute for Social Studies).
