Academy's cooperation in diplomatic training with Indonesia
08 Apr 2014 - 18:58

Clingendael's Academy Director, Mr. Ron Ton, delivered several seminars at the Centre of Education and Training (CET) in Jakarta in the week of the 24th of March 2014. The CET is part of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) and a strategic partner of the Clingendael Academy.

Providing trainings and capacity building on international diplomatic skills forms an important element in the cooperation. Seminars in International Negotiations were provided to the junior and midcareer classes, while the senior class attended a programme in scenario planning and strategic thinking. Each seminar contained introductions, short exercises and a simulation game.

This year's scenario planning exercise for the senior group was focussed on the future of ASEAN in 2024. Two main key uncertainties for ASEAN's future which were selected referred to the external security and threats to ASEAN (stabilisation versus destabilisation) and the trade and monetary development (integration versus fragmentation).

Consequently, the further development of interactive diplomatic training within the CET was discussed with the leadership of the institute. Also, agreement was made on organizing an Alumni conference in Jakarta in the Autumn of 2014 with the support of Kemlu and the Netherlands Embassy in Jakarta.
