8 October 2015. In the past two weeks, Clingendael Academy trained a group of senior diplomats from Indonesia. Skills training, informative lectures and working visits contributed to the ability of the participants to act as strategic decision makers.

Clingendael Academy trains many different groups from many different countries, but the relationship with Indonesia remains a special one. The Academy provides three diplomatic training programmes for Indonesian groups every year: a junior programme, a mid-career programme and a senior programme. The partnership in diplomatic training between the Netherlands and Indonesia goes back to 2004; since then over 500 Indonesian diplomats have been trained at Clingendael.

Lectures on issues like ‘the Netherlands as gateway to the EU’ and ‘Public Diplomacy in the Digital Age’ alternated with workshop in skills such as in mediation, scenario building and media training. The group especially appreciated this practical side of the programme. Overall, the programme gave them new ideas to take home. The programme ended with a ceremony with representatives of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Indonesia in The Hague.

While the programme for the senior diplomats from Indonesia has just ended, the diplomatic couse for Indonesian junior diplomats has yet started this week.
