Course for Diplomats from the Arab Region
08 Oct 2015 - 15:12

The 8th edition of the Course for Diplomats from the Arab Region (CDAR) consisted of participants from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia. In six weeks time, the group had lectures on public diplomacy, political and economic challenges for the MENA region, international law, European Union issues, and many other themes. Next to the lectures, the participants received training in a range of skills, including intercultural communication, working with gender and protocol. In addition to the programme at Huys Clingendael, there were working visits to different institutions in both The Hague and Brussels.

International Security in the 21st Century

In the fifth week of the programme, Gen. Maj. Frank van Kappen lectured to group on security threats in the 21st century. He discussed how global power shifts create uncertainty and how this challenges international security. Van Kappen, being a former military advisor to the UN Secretary-General, based his lecture on his broad practical experience, which made the lecture very concrete. One of the participants said it was a rich and fascinating lecture.

Speakers in diplomatic programmes at Clingendael Academy are always a mixture of trainers, lecturers and practinioners - both from the Institute itself as well as external speakers. This offers participants a broad perspective, thereby optimally enhancing their insights and capabilities in diplomatic work.
