Clingendael Academy’s training project on the EU-Tunisia free trade negotiations prepared the Tunisian negotiation team for negotiations with the EU. The first full round of the EU-Tunisia Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) took place in April 2016 in Tunis.

Through our training, the Tunisian negotiating team got equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to better negotiate the DCFTA, by focusing on:

  • The institutional functioning and competences of the EU and its member states in matters of trade, negotiation styles and cultural differences in negotiations;
  • Key principles underpinning a successful negotiation.

According to one participant, the most important learning experience of the training was the realisation that “negotiations do not have to be a zero-sum game and the win-win approach can be very effective”.
