Introduction

Brexit and the European Council summit: Close to the finish line or a kick into the long grass?

Please register here.

A week before the UK is due to leave the European Union, the Clingendael Institute brings together experts from the worlds of politics, journalism and thinktanks to discuss where we stand in the Brexit negotiations, and what will happen next. Will there be an extension? And if so, what kind? And how does this affect the prospects of reaching a Brexit deal? As news from a crucial European Council meeting comes in, we will explore its implications for the negotiations and assess dynamics in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and the European institutions.

Speakers include Tim Oliver (Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Diplomacy and International Governance at Loughborough University London), Nicolai von Ondarza (Head of Research Division at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, SWP), John Peet (Political and Brexit editor, The Economist), and Georgina Wright (Senior Researcher, Institute for Government).

The roundtable discussion will be moderated by Rem Korteweg (Senior Research Fellow, the Clingendael Institute).
