Clingendael Academy has been working closely with the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine on a series of capacity building projects to exchange knowledge, share insights and improve diplomatic training.

In the fall of 2018, four trainers and the director from the Ukraine Diplomatic Academy visited Clingendael to delve deep into curriculum development, classroom interaction, simulation design and course evaluation.

For the second activity, the Diplomatic Club of Odessa provided the scene for an intense training on economic diplomacy and trade negotiations for Ukrainian diplomats and other civil servants.

For the third and final session, from 3 -5 June 2019, Clingendael Academy director Ron Ton traveled to Kiev for a two-day training on strategies and concepts in international negotiations. The midcareer diplomats from the Ukrainian MFA put these concepts into practice by participating in various negotiation simulations.

These three training activities are just the latest in a long cooperation between Clingendael Academy and the Ukraine, which began in 1991 and includes many notable alumni. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vasyl Bodnar trained at Clingendael twenty years ago and met with director Ron Ton during his recent visit to Kiev, illustrating the long lasting ties that diplomatic training forges.
