What are the latest political developments in the world? Will the EU become a geopolitical actor in its own right? How will the climate crisis, digital revolution and socio-economic inequality shape the political constellations of the next decade? What role will rising continents like Africa play, and what are the consequences of the growing importance of outer space? And what does the future hold for relations between China, Russia and the West?

Our course International Politics offers you the opportunity to dive into these kinds of issues with leading researchers, practitioners and opinion makers. Insights are derived from case studies on current international affairs.

Training sessions: 8 afternoons

During 8 sessions on Monday afternoons (13:00-17:00 hrs) we will discuss the most relevant themes within the field of international politics. You will gain the knowledge necessary to participate in discussions on international political issues and will be able to put news headlines in a broader, long-term (geopolitical) context.

Entry requirements

The course International Politics is open for everyone with an interest in international political affairs, hence there are no entry requirements. However, the course is very popular. The maximum amount of participants is 20, so make sure to register on time!

Do you require a visa to join our training in The Netherlands? Find out how to apply here. The Clingendael Institute is unfortunately not able to write visa support letters. If you already have a valid visa, please upload it in the registration form.

What will you learn?

After this course you will be able to:

  • Analyse the most important frameworks, actors and trends in international politics from different disciplinary perspectives (e.g. from an economic, technological and security perspective).
  • Place recent political developments around the globe within a broader and long-term context, and understand how the issues relate to each other.
  • Go beyond theoretical insights through the use of a practical toolkit
  • Identify specific political challenges to you or your organisation.

Each course’s unique content and speakers are based on state-of-the-art research, contemporary developments and the participants’ needs. The course programme is structured along coherent thematic and regional modules.

All individual sessions are tailormade and encourage discussion between participants and experts. An additional online learning environment helps participants structure their insights before, during and after the course and enables them to engage with the material in a modern, interactive and creative way.

The course also prioritises the practical applicability of insights. The sessions focussed on skills and work processes, such as group discussions, a multilateral decision-making simulation and a scenario-building workshop, help participants go beyond the theory.

During the course International Politics you will be trained by trainers from the Clingendael Academy, leading researchers, practitioners and opinion makers. Teachers in previous courses were former NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, member of the European Parliament Bart Groothuis, Political Science professor Catherine de Vries and future technology expert Haroon Sheikh. Participants also met Clingendael’s in-house experts, such as Ingrid D'Hooghe (China relations), Hans Wurzer (Middle East) and Louise van Schaik (climate change).

There will also be many opportunities for discussions and networking between participants and with the various experts, culminating in an informal event at the end of the course.

Additional information

The total workload of this course consists of eight half-day sessions (of 4 hours) + approximately 2 hours of preparation time per week.
