Is Europe's far-right surge unstoppable? The case of Germany

During this session, Dr. Matthias Quent, sociologist, founder of the Institut für Demokratie und Zivilgesellschaft (IDZ), and author of "Deutschland Rechts Aussen", offered his perspective on the rise of the AfD in Germany. Dr. André Krouwel, Lecturer of Comparative Political Science at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam and founder of 'Kieskompas', gave a broader overview of far-right populism in Europe.

In September 2019, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) obtained its best-ever result in state elections. Its success fits within a trend of increasing electoral support for anti-EU, anti-migration parties across Europe. But what is really driving the far-right surge in Germany? And what will a strong AfD mean for Germany´s position and role in the EU?
