The Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael‘ is a leading think tank and academy on international affairs. Through our analyses, training and public debate we aim to inspire and equip governments, businesses, and civil society in order to contribute to a secure, sustainable and just world.  

The Institute has three departments: Research, Academy and Corporate Staff. Within the Research Department we are looking for a highly motivated:

Intern – Planetary Security Initiative

32- 36 hours per week

You will support the ‘Planetary Security Initiative’, a project implemented by the sustainability & climate team. PSI and this internship position are part of one of the three units of Clingendael Research, the EU & Global Affairs Unit, which consists of about 18 (senior, medior and junior) Research Fellows and several Associate Fellows and interns. The internship is for a period of four months (with possibility to extend), starting January 2023.

Job description

Relevant tasks are:

•    Research assistance with a specific focus on policies to reduce negative security impact

                        of climate change and areas where this issue is most pressing (Middle-East, Sahel, Horn of Africa, and South Asia)

•    Writing and editing content for the website

  • Assistance in organising (international) events

•    Assistance in organising outreach on publications and events

•    Developing content for social media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn)

•    Monitoring media, social media, events and publications on the climate-security nexus

Qualifications and experience

We would be interested if the following requirements are met:

  • Applicants should be enrolled in a relevant Bachelor or Master degree programme (e.g. communication, political science, international relations, international development or similar)
  • Knowledge of Arabic is a strong asset,
  • Excellent writing skills and good command of the English language,
  • Enthusiasm for and curiosity in the topics and their policy relevance,
  • Excellent communicative and social skills (service minded),
  • Capable of working independently and being well-organised,
  • Team player, capable of working under pressure,
  • International experience is a plus,

Technical requirements:

  • EER/Switzerland nationality OR holder of a Dutch study visa

Internship compensation

Interns receive a compensation of € 450 gross per month for a full-time position.
