Diplomats from Eastern Europe and the Caucasus (EEC) require a strong skillset to handle complexity and differentiation in their bilateral relations and vis-à-vis international organisations. What diplomatic tools do they need to further their interests effectively? What role does the EU play in the region? And how can young diplomats effectively respond to emerging trends in fields like energy, trade and digitalisation? From 1 November until 18 November, the Clingendael Academy touched upon these questions by hosting a training programme for 15 young diplomats from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. This training was based on an integrated approach, pertaining to five distinct modules:   essential diplomatic skills, international security, European Union engagement, economic diplomacy & cooperation, and multilateralism & international law.

We were very honoured to have this wonderful group of participants together. Despite the differences and challenges countries face, the participants were incredibly professional, engaged and creative. Perhaps the most memorable aspect of this training was their open, friendly and self-reflective attitude which led to a comfortable training environment and strong personal relationships. The next generation is promising. Clingendael Academy looks back on a productive and fruitful training!
