Since the start of the Brexit negotiations in April 2017, the upcoming October summit was always considered critical in order to reach an agreement on Britain’s orderly withdrawal from the EU. But time is running short, and the two sides still face a number of outstanding issues, including an agreement on the Northern Irish border. In addition, talks regarding the future EU-UK relationship remain complicated. The UK has presented its Brexit white paper, but the EU27 are likely to expect more concessions before a deal can be struck. On both sides, talk of a ‘No Deal’ scenario has increased. How to get out of this impasse? And what can we expect?

During this breakfast session, Stefaan de Rynck, senior advisor to Michel Barnier, the Chief EU negotiator for Brexit, offered his assessment of where the talks stand and the outlook ahead of the October EU summit. After Stefaan´s introductory remarks, participants discussed the topics during a roundtable discussion.
