The EU is a staunch supporter of the WTO. But this key institution could become collateral damage in an escalating Chinese-American trade war. The EU has been trying to move the needle on WTO reform. But where do those efforts stand? And what more could Europe do? Can the WTO survive this onslaught from the world's two largest economies? And if not, what then?

During this 'Breakfast' session, Marc van Heukelen, Permanent Representative of the European Union to the WTO, and Hosuk Lee-Makiyama, director of the European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE), offered their assessments of the challenges facing the WTO in 2019 and discussed what the EU can do to promote trade multilateralism.
