Between Development and Destruction: An Enquiry into the Causes of Conflict in Post-Colonial States
Four main factors are distinguished: the processes of state-formation and nation-building; the rise or return of ethnicity and nationalism; socio-economic factors; and the armaments-conflict nexus. The volume also provides in-depth regional analyses, as well as policy perspectives on the issue of conflict and development.
Luc van de Goor is a Researcher at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations, 'Clingendael', in the framework of the project Causes of Conflict in the Third World. He studied history at the University of Utrecht. He wrote the survey on causes of conflict in the third world which formed the basis for this book. Additionally, he has published several articles on the subject.
Kumar Rupesinghe is Secretary-General of International Alert and Chair of the International Peace Research Association's Commission on Internal Conflicts and their Resolution (ICON).
He has published and edited many articles and books on the issues of ethnicity, identity and governance in relation to international conflict, as well as the role of non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations in conflict transformation.
Paul Sciarone is a member of the Policy Planning Staff at the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Directorate-General of International Cooperation, DGIS). He has been active in the field of development cooperation since 1977. His current work focuses on military expenditures of developing countries, humanitarian aid, and conflict and development. He also contributed to the policy memorandum Humanitarian Aid between Conflict and Development (1993).
