EEAS fails to impress the Dutch, but may bring added influence

The Netherlands was rather supportive of the establishment of the European External Action Service (EEAS). This article looks at the impact and influence of the EEAS on Dutch diplomacy.

The Dutch government sees various opportunities for the EEAS and EU delegations, but it is too early to take over substantial tasks from national embassies. So far, only some minor changes have been made to the way Dutch diplomacy operates. The Netherlands is likely to support the development of the EEAS and a more assertive EU foreign policy, as long as it doesn't conflict with its own convictions.
