International Mediation and Consensus-Building
With its multitude of actors and the complexity of international decision-making, mediation and consensus-building skills are more useful than ever. Professionals who are able to build bridges and ensure consensus are becoming increasingly more valuable. Mediation abilities & consensus building techniques might make the difference between success and failure.
For example how to successfully lead a peace-building mission, chair international meetings, build stronger coalition between political parties and or manage a team in a multicultural environment.
Mediation and consensus building might be the key to success in any EU negotiation. It could be used to improve the role of the Netherlands internationally, but also to better manage local partners or to coordinate stakeholders more successfully in your own country while negotiating internationally.
How does mediation & consensus building work?
Mediation first requires an excellent understanding of the situation and negotiation processes. It also requires a specific set of skills. Key factors are process management, listening skills, empathy and creative solution-finding. Questions central to this training include: how do you establish yourself as a credible mediator? How do you gain access to sensitive information? What kind of interventions are needed and when? What kind of behavioural techniques can be used?
During this three-day intensive seminar, participants will be trained in the skills for mediation as well as in using preparation tools.
Who is this training course for?
Are you a professional who is responsible for achieving targets, but who is dependent on complex teamwork to meet those targets, for example:
- Chairperson of an EU working party
- Chair of a committee in an international organization
- Team leader in a business consortium
- Coordinator of an interdepartmental working group
- Project manager for an international peace development project
- Manager of an international team
- Professional in the Peace & Security field
Are the following characteristics holding your team back to cooperate effectively?
- They are multicultural (different nationalities, but also different organisational cultures);
- They have a variety of people with specific (personal) interests;
- The teams regularly experience unclear conflicts about issues with little substance, but delays the work;
- A few people in the group dominate the proceedings, resulting in ‘egotiation’ rather than negotiation.
Then this training course is for you. It will help you to mediate during conflicts and to build consensus more effectively.
What will you learn?
After completing the course, participants have:
- Knowledge of the characteristics of mediation processes;
- Learned the do’s and don’ts of effective mediation;
- Improved their mediation skills;
- A clear understanding of their own mediation profile;
- Tools to recognise specific bargaining tactics and how to respond;
- Knowledge of tools and instruments to use during mediation processes.
