Enhancing intercultural communication: A 3-day training

In today’s interconnected world, navigating intercultural and international environments is an essential skill for professionals. Last month, Clingendael hosted a 3-day open-enrolment training on Intercultural Communication, equipping participants with the tools to communicate effectively across cultures.

If I encounter an unfamiliar culture tomorrow, I now feel better equipped to engage in meaningful conversations

- says Jeroen Deckmyn, participant autumn 2024

At the heart of this training was our PACIS Model of Intercultural Capacity—a theoretical framework that places awareness at its core. Participants began by exploring their own cultural framework and understanding its influence on communication, before identifying common pitfalls in intercultural exchanges and appreciating the profound role culture plays in shaping communication processes. By cultivating this awareness, participants were able to build the skills needed to minimise miscommunication and enhance their cultural competence.

The training blended theory with practice through a variety of interactive exercises. Participants took part in roleplays, analysed case studies, and reflected on their own experiences using the PACIS model. These activities provided a dynamic, hands-on environment where participants could test and refine their skills.

The course also provided a platform for professionals to exchange ideas, share experiences, and learn from one another in a diverse and enriching setting. This particular edition brought together professionals from the private and public sectors, education, diplomacy, and defence, fostering a unique opportunity for cross-sector dialogue.
