Clingendael Academy is one of the world's largest independent training centres for diplomats and professionals working internationally. Also in 2024, the Academy continued to train diplomats, civil servants, humanitarian negotiators, peace negotiators, mediators and other professionals from all corners of the world. In the Hague, online or on location: here are some of Academy's highlights and stories of its alumni in 2024.
First diplomacy training for African Union Commission
Clingendael Academy was honoured to receive a delegation from the African Union Commission for a two-week diplomatic training programme. Clingendael Academy and the African Union have a longstanding relationship, showcased in many trainings to AU member states and the annual training for FemWise-Africa members. This training marked the first edition of a programme exclusively designed for staff from the African Union Commission itself.

Clingendael Academy's debut at Geneva Peace Week
Clingendael Academy, in collaboration with Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP), successfully hosted a workshop at Geneva Peace Week titled ‘Mastering negotiation in conflict: Role-play and insights from the field’. The session aimed to immerse participants in the complexities of negotiating in conflict settings, with a focus on unarmed civilian protection.

Energy transition programme 2024 concluded
Clingendael Academy has successfully concluded a two-week programme – in collaboration with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) – on Energy Transition in Agriculture and Land Use for civil servants and professionals from the Middle East and North Africa.

Conference on Dutch approach to humanitarian action
A day after the parliamentary debate on humanitarian assistance, Clingendael and KUNO jointly organised a conference on future choices for humanitarian action. Using the frame of a crossroads moment in which political changes, funding changes, and the increasing calls for system reform demand critical reflection and discussion.

Enhancing intercultural communication: A 3-day training
In today’s interconnected world, navigating intercultural and international environments is an essential skill for professionals. Last month, Clingendael hosted a 3-day open-enrolment training on Intercultural Communication, equipping participants with the tools to communicate effectively across cultures.

Negotiation training for European diplomatic programme
How do you respond when EU negotiations are nearing a deadlock? How do you effectively negotiate in EU trilogues with various counterparts? And how can you move a negotiation towards a win-win solution? 35 participants from all 27 EU member states grappled with these questions during the Clingendael training on EU negotiations at the European Diplomatic Programme.

Strengthening South African-Dutch cyber cooperation through training
Clingendael Academy delivered a Cyber Diplomacy course at South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) in Pretoria. The cyber diplomacy course started with an introduction to the international cyber threat landscape and a cyber risk assessment for South Africa.

Training new members of the UN Security Council
Clingendael Academy conducted a specialised training in New York for diplomats representing the newly elected members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC): Denmark, Greece, Panama, Pakistan, and Somalia. These countries will serve on the Council for the 2025–2026 term.
