Britse emotie vs. economische rationaliteit bij Brexit-referendum

De Brexit-discussie lijkt een puur Brits fenomeen, maar is dat niet. Het Verenigd Koninkrijk heeft zich altijd afgekeerd van al te sterke EU-integratie. Maar anders dan in eerdere Britse discussies over de EU, spelen economische thema’s nu ook een belangrijke rol.

De opbrengst van de interne markt valt tegen en de euro leidt tot een vorm van Europese samenwerking waar geen steun voor is. Het Brexit-referendum is niet toevallig tijdens de eurocrisis opgekomen. De Britse discussies lopen daarmee gelijk op met de groeiende weerstanden in andere lidstaten.
