De Nederlandse verkiezingen, die vanuit de rest van Europa met argusogen bekeken werden, bleken uiteindelijk een betere start van het Europese verkiezingsjaar dan sommigen vreesden. Hoewel euro-sceptische partijen zoals de PVV en Forum voor Democratie enkele zetels wonnen, kan er niet van een doorslaggevende overwinning van het ‘anti-EU’ kamp gesproken worden. Hiermee zou ogenschijnlijk met de Nederlandse verkiezingen het ‘anti-EU sentiment’ een halt toegeroepen zijn.
Nu zijn de ogen gericht op Frankrijk, waar de presidentsverkiezingen op 23 april met 11 kandidaten van start zullen gaan. De Franse verkiezingen worden als uiterst onvoorspelbaar gezien, maar zijn tegelijkertijd van essentieel belang voor de toekomst van de Europese Unie.
Presidentskandidaat Marine Le Pen is voorstander van een ‘Frexit’ en heeft een serieuze kans zowel de eerste ronde als de eindronde te winnen. Ondanks zijn rijzende ster is het allesbehalve zeker dat de ‘pro-Europese’ Emanuel Macron in de tweede ronde tegenover Le Pen komt te staan. Wat echter zeker is dat de presidentskandidaten uiteenlopende ideeën hebben over hoe de EU eruit zou moeten zien.
