Until March 2018 Mercè Torruella y Mazurel worked as a Training & Research Fellow at Clingendael Academy. At the Academy Mercè designed and coordinated diplomatic training programmes for (foreign) diplomats and military officers. In addition, she was involved in the francophone training programmes. Next to her role as a programme coordinator, she gave skills training to a variety of groups.

Prior to joining Clingendael, Mercè gave two courses at Amsterdam University College: International Institutions and European Integration. She holds a LLB and LLM with a specialisation in Public International Law from Leiden Law School and has also studied at Université Jean Moulin, Lyon 3. During her studies, she did an internship at the Permanent Delegation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to UNESCO, worked for two years as the student-assistant of Professor and Senator N.J. Schrijver and gave pleading tutorials at Leiden Law School. In her Master thesis she compared diplomatic practice with the competences of the EU: does the EU act in accordance with the principle of conferral and the division of competences between the Union and its member states during the meetings of the main decision-making organs of UNESCO and the main decision-making bodies of the OECD?
