Willemijn Tiekstra started as a research assistant at the Clingendael Institute. Having a legal background, she focuses on migration, the implementation of European migration policies in particular. Topics falling within her mandate include border management, Common European Asylum System Reforms and EU cooperation with third countries. Her work thus focuses on the implementation of internal EU policies as well as EU external relations with African countries. Per August 2018 Willemijn works as a research fellow at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) - The Hague. Her research focuses on the symbiosis of counter-terrorism measures, criminal law provisions, and immigration powers, with a particular emphasis on the impact on human dignity and individual rights.

Willemijn is Master of Laws and has completed her Masters in International and European Law at the University of Groningen. Prior to working at the Clingendael Institute, Willemijn has worked as a Policy Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hague and at the Netherlands Embassy in Athens.
