How do you respond when EU negotiations are nearing a deadlock? How do you effectively negotiate in EU trilogues with various counterparts? And how can you move a negotiation towards a win-win solution? 35 participants from all 27 EU member states grappled with these questions during the Clingendael training on EU negotiations at the European Diplomatic Programme.

In three days of training, the participants learned about negotiation strategies, managing constituencies, bargaining theory and EU negotiation behaviour. They also took part in various rounds of negotiations, culminating in a full day of multilateral negotiations on fictional draft conclusions of the EU’s Political and Security Committee.

We are thankful to all participants for their active participation and vivid spirit during the negotiation simulations . We would also like to warmly thank the European External Action Service for the organization of the EDP and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their financial support.
