Clingendael Sanctions Network
The Clingendael Sanctions Network is an invite-only event to bring together policymakers, think tankers, academics, NGO experts, and other practitioners to explore the main challenges faced by Dutch and European sanctions policy and work collaboratively towards new solutions for important problems in this sphere.
In recent years, sanctions have rapidly increased in importance as a key European, and more broadly Western, policy instrument to punish violators of international law. At the same time, the growing impact of sanctions on international politics and the global economy raise a whole series of important questions, ranging from ways to improve the effectiveness of sanctions and close loopholes in sanctions regimes to humanitarian and ethical concerns, as well as questions surrounding the uses and limitations of sanctions as a strategic policy instrument.
To help policymakers answer these questions and meet current challenges, the Dutch MFA has requested the Clingendael Institute to create a Sanctions Network to facilitate knowledge exchange between policymakers and experts working on sanctions with the aim of informing both Dutch and European sanctions policy.
