EU and Dutch policy towards Asia for many years largely revolved around positive engagement of China. However, China has risen without socialising fully into the existing liberal international order. In fact, in some respects it poses challenges to it. In this context, the EU and its member states are therefore seeking to deepen economic and political relations with so-called ‘like-minded countries’, Japan and India.
Is the time ripe for an EU-Japan-India trilateral? And what would that mean? What are the key incentives and drawbacks of deepened cooperation? And how does Europe relate to other regional initiatives like the ‘Quad 2.0’, the Free and Open Indo-Pacific, and the Asia-Africa Growth Corridor? What steps should Delhi, Brussels and Tokyo take to deliver on the ambition of deepened relations, and what are the chances of success?
This Roundtable followed on the publication of the Clingendael Policy Brief ‘Reimagining Europe’s partnerships with India and Japan: A New Trilateral?’ by Maaike Okano-Heijmans and brought together a select group of experts, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss these topics in their Dutch and broader European contexts.
Guest speakers were Kunihiko Miyake (Canon Institute of Global Studies, Tokyo), Garima Mohan (Global Public Policy Institute, Berlin), and Peter Potman (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands) for a roundtable discussion on the future of EU-Japan-India ties. This event was moderated by Jan Melissen, Senior Research Fellow Clingendael Institute.
