Expert seminar: Indonesia’s Rise and Democracy Promotion in Asia
Europe/Amsterdam 12 2013
Introduction

The debate about democracy in Asia is important, complex, and first of all the business of Asian countries themselves. The Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) is an inclusive annual summit where Asian political leaders take a close look at the barometer of democracy development in their region.

Netherlands Minister of Foreign Affairs, Frans Timmermans will visit the Forum in Bali in November as an observer to see the Asian sharing of experiences among democracies and non-democracies in action.

Ambitious power

This uniquely timed seminar brings together experts and leading Indonesian practitioners Hassan Wirajuda, chief architect of modern Indonesian foreign policy, and I Ketut Putra Erawan, Executive Director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy. The seminar will discuss the challenges of democracy development in the Asia-Pacific region, and the international strategy of Indonesia as an ambitious power in the world’s fastest rising region.

The expert seminar at Clingendael is not open to the general public, but will be concluded with a public lecture by Dr Wirajuda on “Democracy, Democratization and Non-Democracies in Asia”.
