After a year of European elections, it is time to draw up the balance. How have right-wing populist movements fared across the EU and what does it spell for the future? The rise in support for anti-establishment parties is often ascribed to a backlash against globalisation. But is this driven by economics, or identity politics, or both? What explains the revolt on the right?
Key note speaker Matthew Goodwin, Professor of Politics at Kent University and Senior Fellow at Chatham House, is an expert on European populism and UK politics. In his opening remarks, prof. Goodwin addressed the issues of right-wing populism in Europe on the eve of new elections. Has the populist tide been turned, of have we all been lulled into a false sense of complacency?
After the key note remarks, the debate was continued with a roundtable discussion.
