Seventh lecture in the lecture series of SID-Netherlands 2008 ? 2009: Economic Growth and the Common Good: Towards a New Vision on Markets and Finance in the Age of Globalisation.

In many developing countries institutions to safeguard social security of its citizens have not been fully developed, be it in the area of employment benefits, health insurance or invalidity. In some countries these arrangements are still completely absent. Recently attempts have been made to introduce social security systems in developing societies with external support. The DHAN (Development of Humane Action) Foundation in India is one example of those trying to improve social security, by offering insurance schemes to poor inhabitants in Southern India to insure decease, invalidity, and damage to belongings (land, cattle, house). Aside from this project, DHAN runs several other projects aiming to improve quality and security of life by stimulating self help through micro-financing schemes; community banking programmes; and a tank-fed agriculture programme for small farmers.
