Conflict and Fragility

International Criminal Justice and the role of social media
Europe/Amsterdam 09 2013 09:45
Introduction

The Kony 2012 campaign, the revelations of Edward Snowden, current reporting from Libya, Egypt and Syria, the ICC’s alleged focus on Africa – just examples of matters of international justice wherein social media play a paramount role in discussing the application of international criminal law.

On Thursday the 29th of August, 11 influential international bloggers will visit Clingendael in the light of the 100th anniversary of the Peace Palace. On this occasion the Clingendael Institute organises an open panel discussion on international criminal justice and the role of the media.

With a panel consisting of:

  • Mr Thomas Verfuss, journalist with ANP and ‎president of the Association of Journalists at the International Criminal Court (AJICC);
  • Mr Marten Youssef, spokesperson for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon;
  • Mrs Pereira de Sousa, representative of the International Criminal Court, Office of the Prosecutor;
  • Mrs Stephanie Barbour, Amnesty International’s Centre for International Justice;
  • Mrs Liesbeth Zegveld, international defence lawyer with Böhler Lawyers and professor at Leiden University.
