Processes of International Negotiation (PIN) in Saint Petersburg (23-24 May)
The latest developments in negotiation research, policy conclusions for the Arab Spring project and the second workshop in the reconciliation project; three very interesting events are scheduled during the two-day visit (23-24 May) of the Processes of International Negotiation (PIN) project of the Clingendael Institute to the School of International Negotiations of the Saint Petersburg State University.
Every year PIN organizes several roadshows on location. The first roadshow of 2013 is in the morning of 23 May and features most members of the PIN Steering Committee, including Fen Hampson on new challenges for international multilateral negotiations, Mikhail Troitskiy on Russia-US arms control negotiations and Guy O. Faure with a talk about asymmetrical negotiations with a focus on dealing with terrorists. Next to the PIN SC members, two scholars from Germany, Andreas Lange and Martin Kesternich, present their findings from their recent research project on climate change negotiations.
I. William Zartman presents the policy conclusions of Negotiations in Transitions (the PIN project about the Arab Spring) in an afternoon seminar on 23 May. The policy conclusions will be available later this year as a Clingendael Policy Brief. The full book of the project – working title: Intifidat: Negotiations in the shadow of social movements –, edited by professor Zartman, is expected early 2014, featuring case studies from most Arab Spring countries.
The visit of PIN wraps up on the morning of 24 May with the second workshop of the reconciliation project. The first workshop was in Port-Elizabeth, South-Africa, in October 2012. During the second workshop project conveners Mark Anstey and Valerie Rosoux discuss the concepts of power and timing, while Rudolf Schüssler focusses on ethics, Moty Cristal on security issues and Moti Melamud on the case study between Germany and Israel.
