The Clingendael Institute, the British American Security Information Council (BASIC) and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs have the pleasure of announcing a public panel discussion entitled ‘Reducing the Risks of Nuclear Weapons Use’ with three renowned foreign experts.
The circumstances for nuclear arms control and disarmament initiatives are currently very challenging. Nevertheless, in multilateral forums relatively broad support has recently grown for what is often called ‘nuclear risk reduction’ or ‘strategic risk reduction’: measures contributing to limiting the risk that nuclear weapons will ever be used, on purpose or by accident. It is expected that this may be one of the topics on which some progress could be made during the upcoming Review Conference of the Non-Proliferation Treaty in April/May 2020.
During this panel discussion three international experts will share their perspectives on the issue of nuclear risk reduction:
Melissa Hanham is the Deputy Director of the Open Nuclear Network and the Director of the Datayo Project at the One Earth Future Foundation.
Andreas Persbo is the Research Director of the European Leadership Network.
Sico van der Meer is a research fellow at the Clingendael Institute.
The discussion will be chaired by Heather Williams, a lecturer at King's College London.
