The Clingendael Institute and The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs are jointly organising a public lecture, entitled ‘Is the Non-Proliferation Treaty Still Relevant?’ by George Perkovich.

Dr. George Perkovich is a renowned expert on nuclear strategy and non-proliferation issues, currently overseeing the Technology and International Affairs Programme and Nuclear Policy Programme of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

He will share his views on the future of the ‘corner-stone’ of global nuclear weapons non-proliferation and disarmament: the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Is the NPT still relevant in times where nuclear arms control seems less attractive to world leaders? After the recent demise of the INF Treaty, the approaching end of the New START Treaty, and the US withdrawal from the JCPOA – the nuclear deal with Iran – is there still enough support for the NPT? During the last NPT Review Conference in 2015 the participating states were not able to conclude with a traditional consensus document. What are the prospects for the next Review Conference, scheduled for 2020?
