Prof. Zhang Weiwei, whose recent book The China Wave has sold over one million copies worldwide, will speak in the final session of the Clingendael Conference on Culture and Understanding in China-Europe Relations. His public lecture is entitled “How to Understand China Today”. Prof Zhang’s cultural and civilizational perspective on contemporary China will address three controversial topics, namely, how to assess the Chinese economy; how to understand the nature of the Chinese state; and how to make sense of China’s political system.

Prof Zhang is Distinguished Professor of International Relations at Fudan University and Director of the Institute of China Studies, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. He has written extensively on China’s economic and political reform. Jonathan Holslag, Professor at the Free University Brussels and Research Fellow at the Brussels Institute of Contemporary China Studies in Brussels will act as discussant, to be followed by a discussion with the public.
