8th annual training for UNDP Insider Mediators in the Hague

From 9 to 20 December 2024, Clingendael Academy partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to host its annual training programme for insider mediators. Since 2016, Clingendael has been providing skills programmes for local mediators to equip them with the skills and tools to address complexities they face effectively.

These mediators, who are deeply connected to the conflicts they help resolve, play a crucial role in local peacebuilding due to their intimate understanding of the issues. At the same time, they face many challenges that were shared and discussed during the trainings.

The two-week training focused on honing the negotiation and mediation skills of the participants through immersive role plays, simulations, and hands-on workshops. Additionally, participants actively shared their invaluable experiences from diverse contexts, collectively exploring key questions around impartiality, trust-building, strategic planning and inclusivity.

Beyond the classroom, participants enjoyed cultural and networking activities, including a boat cruise in Amsterdam, a dinner, and a visit to the International Criminal Court (ICC). At the ICC, attendees observed a live hearing and explored the court’s pivotal role in global justice.

Throughout the programme, participants consistently commented on the value of learning from both trainers and peers, and the engaging simulations and interactive discussions. One of the participants evaluated; “The training was invaluable, and I gained immense knowledge and skills in negotiation and mediation. I am eager to apply these skills to help people in my country, promoting peaceful conflict resolution and constructive dialogue.’’ Clingendael remains committed to supporting insider mediators in their peacebuilding efforts, offering practical skills and facilitating networks to drive meaningful and lasting change.
