Annual training for Indonesian diplomats

The diplomats visit the Leiden Bio Science Park

In September 2024, Clingendael Academy hosted its annual training programme for Indonesian midcareer diplomats. This two-week programme strengthened participants' diplomatic expertise and fostered professional networks, preparing them for greater responsibilities in policymaking and international affairs.

The programme consisted of three key modules. The first, Multilateralism and International Cooperation, featured in-depth discussions on the multilateral system and a panel on effective interdepartmental coordination, where representatives from the Ministries of Health, Welfare and Sports, Foreign Affairs, and Climate Policy and Green Growth shared insights on topics like global health, climate diplomacy, and energy security. This module also included a working visit to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a session with an OECD representative on multilateral cooperation. The second module on Security Trends and Opportunities included visits to the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, where participants gained insights into the security dimensions of international law.

The final module, Economic and Sustainable Growth, covered skills such as stakeholder management and international negotiations, and a special training on media and public speaking led by two professional journalists. A highlight was the first-ever visit of a Clingendael diplomatic group to the Leiden Bioscience Park. By being onsite at a leading research hub, participants learned about global health and explored the cooperation between the Netherlands and Indonesia — an exciting and insightful experience for everyone.

The two weeks provided these midcareer diplomats with a unique opportunity for learning and exchange.
