Clingendael Academy welcomes Indian diplomats
The diplomatic scene is continually changing, and perhaps never more so than in this technology-driven 21st century. Navigating this dynamic scene requires passion, knowledge, and skills.
This March, Clingendael had the opportunity to welcome a delegation of Indian diplomats to The Hague. During this week, participants sharpened their diplomatic skills, deepened their understanding of the Netherlands’ foreign policy in general as well as their knowledge and insights in modern diplomacy – especially including the link between technology and geopolitics.
The participants were welcomed on the first day to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to learn more about Dutch Foreign Policy and Dutch-India bilateral relations in a changing geopolitical context. This was followed by a keynote lecture by former Minister for Foreign Trade and Development cooperation, Mr. Tom de Bruijn. During the rest of the week, a range of experts discussed topics as diverse as the role of technology in shaping geopolitics, developments in international law and cyber & tech governance. The programme also included trainings on international negotiations skills.
During this ‘tech-themed’ programme, the diplomats travelled to ASML as flagship visit learning more about the semiconductor industry. The group also enjoyed working visits to the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Peace Palace as well as a visit to the Province of North-Brabant with fruitful discussions on the Brainport region and the role of the provincial government in Dutch high-tech and innovation. Lastly, the Indian Embassy hosted the group for a high tea, discussing their impressions of The Netherlands and exchanging thoughts on the working visits and lectures. As part of the social programme, the group visited the Keukenhof tulip gardens.
We look back on a very successful training and look forward to sustaining good relations with India and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
