Clingendael Academy welcomes Indonesian Diplomats

Clingendael

Since 2004, the Clingendael Academy has worked closely with the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has since welcomed many junior, midcareer and senior Indonesian diplomats to The Hague.

In light of current geopolitical, technological and climate-driven challenges in the world, the Indonesian junior diplomats followed a 4-week programme focusing on different themes.

Week one centred on diplomacy in the 21st century, with an emphasis on strengthening core diplomatic skills, including intercultural communication, policy analysis and reporting, negotiation, and effective influencing. Participants were also introduced to various specialised forms of diplomacy, such as economic, climate, and public diplomacy.

Throughout the second and third weeks, participants explored key themes and strategies through a mix of expert-led sessions, interactive workshops, and working visits – of which two days were spent in Brussels. These weeks offered deep dives into critical policy areas relevant to both Indonesian foreign policy and the bilateral relationship with the Netherlands, including international economic relations, sustainability, and water management.

The final week focused on global governance and international law and security. Sessions explored key topics such as The Hague as city of peace and justice, cybersecurity and the role of artificial intelligence in diplomacy, including a working visit to the relevant institutions in The Hague city of peace and justice. During the last session, participants applied the skills they acquired throughout the training and successfully negotiated an agreement in the final pre-COP simulation..

The programme concluded with a festive closing ceremony, looking back on a dynamic, insightful, and inspiring time together and looking very much forward to continuing this collaboration in future editions.
