Clingendael attends Global Humanitarian Aid Event

AidEx

On 23-24 October 2024, the Clingendael Institute participated for the first time in the Global Humanitarian Aid Event in Geneva. This event, focused on emerging global trends shaping the humanitarian space, provided an excellent platform for discussions with the private and the public sector, and other key stakeholders.

During the AidEx Conference, Clingendael colleagues attended panel discussions on crucial topics such as localisation, artificial intelligence, cross-sector partnerships, humanitarian access, and the protection of humanitarian workers—key issues that align closely with the priorities in our programmes.

Key takeaways:

  • Duty of Care: In an increasingly troubled world marked by crises and conflicts, more attention must be given to the protection of humanitarian workers. Greater psychological support should be provided to help humanitarians cope with the challenges they face.
  • Localisation: Stronger representation of local actors is essential in international forums and discussions. As first responders with deep knowledge of local dynamics and close ties to their communities, it is vital to promote locally-led initiatives.
  • Collaboration: Cross-sectoral collaboration is key. To address complex challenges, we must work together more effectively and build stronger partnerships.
  • The Digital Age: Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising the humanitarian sector. While AI offers enormous potential, we must also be aware of its risks and use it responsibly.

As the Clingendael Institute, specialising in training diplomats, humanitarians, and other international professionals, we are committed to monitoring these trends closely. We aim to continue facilitating and fostering interaction and collaboration between humanitarian and diplomatic community.
