Navigating Complexity: Advanced training on conflict resolution, mediation and negotiation with DIRCO
Since 2013, the South African Department on International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and Clingendael Academy have jointly delivered a training programme for African diplomats, peacebuilders and mediators, supported by the Governments of the Norway and The Netherlands.
In the 2026 edition, Ron Ton, Founding Director of Clingendael Academy, was once again invited to lead the negotiation and mediation module. The two-week programme brought together 33 experienced participants from across the African continent as well as South African officials.
Within the two-week course, a three-day intensive training was delivered. The module focused on navigating the complex dynamics of international negotiations, including managing competing interests, power asymmetries, and multi-layered stakeholder environments. Participants explored how to move between distributive and integrative strategies, build coalitions, and create momentum in situations of deadlock.
A range of practical tools and frameworks were applied, including PIN analysis, structured negotiation phases, and strategy techniques. Attention was given to behavioural dimensions such as active listening, escalating versus de-escalating, and consensus building under pressure.
The training was highly experiential, combining these concepts in simulations and role-plays on bilateral and multiparty negotiations, peace process design, self-assessments, handling difficult conversations, and pre-negotiation (“pre-talk”) settings. The module was widely praised for its interactive and practice-oriented approach and was identified by participants as one of the most impactful components of the overall programme.
