Since 2004, Clingendael Academy and the Centre of Education and Training (Pusdiklat) of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (KEMLU) are strategic partners in diplomatic training. As part of the cooperation, Clingendael Academy provides diplomatic skills training in Jakarta.

Digital diplomacy and strategic skills

Four different seminars were conducted by Ron Ton, Director Clingendael Academy. The first one touched upon digital diplomacy and the impact on the work of diplomats. Strategic skills seminars for senior groups were given on “Leadership and strategic policy development” and “ Scenario planning”.

Inter-ministerial negotiations

The last one included a multilateral negotiations seminar for an inter-ministerial target group including policy advisors of 14 Indonesian Ministries. The training on multilateral negotiation skills reflects the internationalisation of the work at line ministries and the call for increased international coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other ministries.

Foreign policy, defence, and cyber

Ron Ton also had meetings at the Netherlands Embassy and the Indonesian parliament. In the parliament he discussed opportunities to extend the cooperation with staff officers of Commission I, which started early this year. Purpose of the cooperation is to have training on focal areas of Commission I related to foreign policy, defence, and cyber, as well as to share best practices between the Netherlands and Indonesia. Other Commissions could also benefit of this kind of cooperation.
