Roundtable: The Dutch position on CBAM

On Monday 19 September 2022, the Clingendael Institute organised the closed roundtable meeting "The Dutch position on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)" at Huys Clingendael in The Hague.

The meeting started with contributions by experts Mohammed Chahim, MEP (PvdA/ S&D) and EP rapporteur CBAM, Harro van Asselt, Professor of Climate Law at the University of Eastern Finland, and Louise van Schaik, Head of the EU & Global Affairs Unit & climate expert at the Clingendael Institute. These contributions were followed by a roundtable discussion with all participants led by Rem Korteweg, Senior Research Fellow at the Clingendael Institute.

Topics discussed included the state of negotiations on CBAM in and between the European institutions (EP, Council, Commission), the collection and use of CBAM revenues, exports rebates and concerns over the WTO compatibility of CBAM, and the connection to international discussions on 'climate clubs' and international trade relations.
