Discussion on Somalia
On 25 September, a delegation of 12 mid-career diplomats from South Africa paid a visit to the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Vincent van Zeijst, Senior Policy Officer for Somalia, briefed the group on Somalia and the current political situation. In the subsequent discussion, the diplomats shared their views on the problems Somalia is facing and the implications for the stability of the region. Common ground was soon found, for example on the issue regarding Somalian refugees who are present in both South Africa and the Netherlands. Support of the international community and regional organizations such as the African Union was considered vital for the transformation of Somalia into a viable state.
