Strengthening Youth from the Horn of Africa in Dialogue and Communication for Peace

At the end of April 2026, the International Centre for Peace, Human Rights and Development in Africa (IPHRDAfrica), together with the Clingendael Institute of International Relations, hosted a regional training programme for youth peacebuilders at the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Over three intensive days, 24 participants from Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Kenya worked together to deepen their skills in communication, conflict resolution, and negotiation.

The training was grounded in one core principle: understanding the other person. Participants were encouraged to look beyond differences and instead focus on shared experiences, common interests, and the importance of empathy in dialogue and peacebuilding processes.

Through interactive discussions, simulations, and role-play exercises, participants explored how people communicate differently across contexts and situations, and how these differences can influence trust, decision-making, and collaboration. Particular attention was given to recognising one’s own assumptions, practising reflective listening, and clarifying what different actors seek and need in negotiation processes.

Working in diverse groups, participants enhanced their ability to communicate across differences, build trust, and find common ground in complex and sensitive situations. The programme also served as a valuable platform for regional exchange, fostering connections and collaboration among youth from across the Horn of Africa.

This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of IPHRDAfrica and its partners to equipping youth engaged in peacebuilding with the skills, awareness, and confidence needed to contribute constructively to dialogue and peace processes in their communities and countries. We extend our thanks to IPHRDAfrica for convening this group and to IPSTC for their hospitality.
