WTO trainees embrace an intensive training
During a beautiful October autumn week, Clingendael Academy organised a programme for trainees of the Netherlands Trainee Programme (NTP), in close cooperation with the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The cohort consisted of 14 participants from as many countries, with a majority representing Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
The training week focused on understanding how trade policy is formulated through the dynamic interplay between public and private sectors within the Dutch economy, as well as the broader politics of trade. A combination of working visits and expert lectures allowed the participants to explore this topic across various levels of decision-making and from multiple perspectives. The group stood out for their enthusiastic and insightful contributions during discussions, whether on the Dutch consultative economy or European trade policy.
Among the programme’s highlights were two notable field visits. At the World Horti Centre, the group discovered how inspiring forms of regional partnerships can lead to innovative outcomes in greenhouse horticulture. And during a visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participants engaged in lively exchanges with Dutch policy officers.
Additionally, the participants enhanced their skills to operate effectively as civil servants in the international arena. Presentation and public speaking skills were emphasised throughout the training, and the group embraced these challenges with full commitment.
The participants are now set to complete their traineeship in Geneva, readying them to make in impact in serving their home countries.
