Head of Tech and Digitalization at Clingendael, Maaike Okano-Heijmans, joins the advisory board of an international European research project on artificial intelligence. The project is titled "Using Artificial Intelligence to Support Regulators and Policy Makers" (AI4POL). The team will conduct research on the practical effects of EU regulation concerning artificial intelligence.
Maaike Okano-Heijmans: "AI is one of the key technologies shaping our digital society and will determine Europe's competitiveness and the digital autonomy of the Netherlands. Clingendael is pleased to support the project team by sharing its own knowledge and experience, and by disseminating the outcomes of the work
The European Union has adopted legislation on the use of AI, including the AI Act. With this, Brussels says it wants to ensure the protection of citizens' rights and the transparency of systems. The researchers want to assess whether the regulation truly benefits EU citizens. Additionally, they will provide governments with insights into AI tools that allow them to monitor and improve the impact of their legislation.
The research involves experts in areas such as technology, ethics, law, economics, political science, and business. The three-year project is part of the EU Horizon program and will run from 2025 to 2027.
