Middle East

Joseph Daher commands all-round expertise on Syria and Lebanon specifically, and on the Middle East in general. He currently teaches at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) and at the University of Ghent (Belgium). He has been an affiliated professor at the European University Institute (EUI).  At the EUI, Joseph worked on the research program entitled "Wartime and post-conflict Syria" between November 2018 and July 2022. Here, he led the research project "The war economy and its impact on (potential) future reconstruction efforts", using a political economy methodology. Between September 2022 and August 2024, Joseph co-managed the “Syrian Trajectories: Challenges and opportunities for peacebuilding” project, also at the EUI. The many papers resulting from these projects have aimed to insert a seam of high-quality and strategic analysis of wartime perspectives into diplomatic efforts that anticipate post-conflict stabilization.

Joseph also published two well-known books: “Hezbollah: The Political Economy of Lebanon's Party of God” (2016) and “Syria after the Uprisings, the Political Economy of State Resilience (2019). Finally, he has a rich experience of providing tailored advice and training for various UN Agencies, NGOs and research centers. His fluent command of English, French and Arabic allows him to synthesize different perspective in play in an accurate and academic fashion.
